What does cotton in conversion mean?
Until some time ago, it was assumed that organic cotton was the key to more sustainability. Numerous clothing brands and fashion labels jumped on it with enthusiasm.
But it soon became clear that organic cotton alone was not enough.
This was not because of the cotton itself. But demand increased enormously, while not even 1% of the world's cotton production was organic. Everyone loves organic cotton. It is the result of healthy crops and responsible cultivation. However, the switch to organic production is so difficult for cotton producers that only a few can afford it.
Thus, 99% of them still rely on conventional farming methods.
Organic-in-conversion cotton comes from farms that are in transition from conventional to organic cultivation. To be certified organic, cotton producers must comply with all organic farming regulations and refrain from using chemicals and GMOs for the entire transition period of three years. Cotton with the "Organic in Conversion" label is therefore just as sustainable as organic cotton.
